This avocado, a Hass seedling, was initially grown in La Jolla, California, and patented by Don Gillogly in order to take advantage of its unusual physical characteristics. It has become something of a darling in the fruit tree catalog world where some outrageous claims are made about high yields, dwarf size, indoor growing success, unbelievable precocity, year-round fruiting, etc.
Our experience with this avocado is that it is striking in its shape and coloring, and rich with a delicious flavor. The tree is medium in height, columnar in shape, and blooms for us just once per year, in the springtime. We would not recommend it for container gardening, any more than we would recommend a Pinkerton or Sharwil which are similar in size. But there is no denying that this lizard-like avocado is fun to grow and fruit and eat. We have found the picked fruit hard to resist because of the weirdness of their appearance coupled with the high quality of the flesh. They are also fun to share with friends.
It acts like an A type avocado in Santa Cruz County.
