This large green-skinned fruit originated in 1938 from a farm in Santa Monica, California. The pear shaped fruit peels easily to reveal rich flesh of excellent quality surrounding a medium sized seed. Did we already mention that this fruit is delicious, very large, and extremely rich? We think that the Hellen is an often-overlooked gem! The Hellen tree is tall, spreading, and lush, producing “B” type flowers. It is known to produce well along the coast. In Santa Cruz County, the Hellen reaches maturity at summer’s end and can be harvested over the next three months.
