The D’Arturo avocado originated in the foothills of the Pajaro Valley, outside of Watsonville, California. It is a chance seeding of Hass, most likely a cross with Bacon, and the tree is tough and quick growing with unusually large leaves. We like this tree because it combines remarkable resistance to cold with early production of nice quality fruit. We have seen it come through a 25°F frost with no damage to the foliage. The fruit starts to ripen in Santa Cruz County in May/June and is medium sized with a small to medium sized pit. The flesh is creamy and rich, and the large tree is a precocious bearer. We are not certain if this tree is an “A” or a “B” type, but its willingness to bear fruit despite Santa Cruz County’s cool springs leads us to assume that it is an “A.”
Sold out for spring 2024.
