Believed to be a seedling of the excellent Guatemalan import Nabal, the Reed avocado originated in Carlsbad, California, on the property of James Reed. Perfect for the backyard grower, this compact tree fruits precociously even with no other tree available for cross-pollination. The fruit that it sets would make its mother proud: the large and round fruit with green pebbly skin yields flesh rated of excellent quality. The seed is in fact fairly large, but more than compensated by the huge quantity of smooth and delicate flesh with a fine “nutty” flavor. Many consider the Reed to be the best tasting of the avocados available in the United States. The fruit ripens after October on California’s Central Coast. The oil content increases with the time the fruit hangs on the tree.
